Ayurveda
Ayurveda is often referred to as the sister science of yoga. It is a system that is based on determining a person’s individual constitution or dosha. It provides specific lifestyle recommendations based on the dosha to maintain health. This is a wonderful system because it is individualized, it teaches body awareness, and it works to monitor and restore health in the body through diet, exercise, herbs, meditation, yoga and many other practical tips. The client may choose to try all of these techniques or may find that by incorporating just a few they have more energy, metal clarity, and feel healthier overall. Another benefit of this practice is learning to identify early signs of illness or imbalance in the body.
Ayurveda defines three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. These doshas are thought to be different combinations of the elements earth, water, fire, air, and ether. The doshas are the life energies behind all of our bodily functions and they influence our personalities, emotions, and thought processes.
Ayurveda theorizes that each of us possesses from conception, a unique percentage of vata, pitta, and kapha (a person’s prakriti). Our prakriti is our own permanent biological blueprint, our true nature. Our prakriti is the template for our original, and therefore personally ideal, state of balance. A doshic imbalance can lead to a myriad of diseases, the seriousness of which is determined by which doshas are in excess, which bodily tissues are affected, and for how long they’re affected. Ayurveda theorizes that disease stems from an imbalance at the spiritual level. In order to restore balance to the physical, mental, and emotional layers of our being, it is important to understand the root of the disease rather than just treating the symptoms. Ayurvedic principles employ practical lifestyle techniques for empowering individuals to manage their health and to have more awareness of their body, mind, and soul.
